History and Legacy

Commodore introduced the Amiga platform in 1985 with custom graphics and sound hardware, a graphical operating environment, and preemptive multitasking that distinguished it from many contemporary home computers.

The Amiga family expanded through systems including the Amiga 500, Amiga 2000, and Amiga 3000, supporting games, productivity software, animation, music, video, desktop publishing, and professional multimedia work.

The NewTek Video Toaster helped establish the Amiga as an influential platform for affordable broadcast graphics, live video effects, animation, titling, and desktop video production.

In 1991, Commodore released the CDTV, or Commodore Dynamic Total Vision, which repackaged Amiga 500 technology into a consumer electronics-style multimedia system with a CD-ROM drive. With the appropriate keyboard, mouse, and external floppy drive, the CDTV could also function much like an Amiga computer.

The Amiga demonstrated that advanced graphics, sampled sound, animation, multitasking, and multimedia production could be available on a personal computer at a comparatively accessible price.

Its influence can still be seen in retro gaming, demo scene productions, digital art, music, video effects, software preservation, and the continuing development of modern upgrades and replacement hardware.

The CDTV also represents an important early attempt to bring CD-ROM multimedia into the living room before multimedia PCs and disc-based game systems became commonplace.
