The Amstrad PCW 8256 was designed primarily as an affordable word-processing system rather than a traditional home computer. It was sold as a complete package with the computer hardware built into the monitor, a keyboard, 3-inch floppy disk drive, and printer.

Technical Specifications

The PCW 8256 uses a Zilog Z80A processor and bank-switched memory architecture designed around word processing and CP/M software. Unlike many contemporary home computers, the PCW was built as a complete working system rather than around television output and gaming hardware.

History and Legacy

Amstrad entered the home computer market during the 1980s with systems designed to be affordable, practical, and sold as complete packages rather than collections of separate components.

The Amstrad PCW 8256, introduced in 1985, was built around a Zilog Z80 processor and combined a monochrome monitor, keyboard, 3-inch floppy drive, printer, CP/M Plus, and Locoscript into an all-in-one word-processing system.

Beyond the PCW line, Amstrad also produced the CPC home computer family, later PCW models, IBM-compatible PCs, and the GX4000 game console.

Amstrad helped make useful computer systems more accessible by bundling the hardware, monitor, software, and often a printer into affordable packages that could be used immediately.

The PCW line introduced many homes, writers, students, and small businesses to word processing and CP/M software, while the CPC line became an important part of the European 8-bit computer market.
